Following receipt of a very generous cheque from the Co-Op’s carrier bag collection scheme, Momentum’s Aberdeen service was invited to the Co-op’s Shape your Community event.
The Shape your Community events are used by the Co-op to allow their members to have a say on how their Co-op can improve communities and champion a better way of doing business whereby local community members/groups are invited to share their work with the members.
Linda MacDonald, Job Coach, attended a recent event on behalf of Momentum, stating “the event was very enlightening; it highlighted communities who were benefitting from the Co-op both locally & abroad. I was invited to talks, a question and answer session & then was able to network with the Co-op staff, plus other charities that had benefitted from the Co-op’s Scheme.”
It was there that she met Paul Thomson, Food Operations Manager for North of Scotland. Linda used the opportunity to explain Momentum’s mission and also her role as a Job Coach. Paul then suggested he could visit Momentum to give a talk on what employers looked for and hopefully give service users a better understanding of what employment could offer them.
The talk was very well attended, with very positive feedback received from service users, with one even stating he felt “very positive” after hearing what Paul had to say.
Following the talk Paul has continued his involvement. Service Users have completed practice application forms which Paul has reviewed with them and held mock interviews to enhance skills and encourage confidence.
Subsequently the Co-Op have indicated they intend to continue their involvement with further motivational talks, application form and interview assistance, with the hope that in the future they can enhance this offering with the provision of work placements and potentially employment opportunities
