About this opportunity
MISS (Miscarriage Information Support Service) is a registered charity. We are a miscarriage support service covering all of Scotland for anyone who has experienced baby loss.
Miscarriage Support (MISS) are looking for a Treasurer to help guide our financial governance and sustainability for the future. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a meaningful difference, ‘giving back’ to the community by using your financial expertise to ensure MISS’s financial integrity and support our strategic planning and sustainable, future growth.
Our current Treasurer is stepping down, so we are looking for a successor. Relevant guidance and excellent support is provided and there is ample time for any new appointment to work alongside our outgoing Treasurer in order to learn and understand all aspects of the Treasurer role, to ensure a smooth handover.
We are particularly interested in applicants who understand the financial needs and challenges of small charities or social impact organisations. You do not need to be a qualified accountant, but a background in finance, bookkeeping, charity finance, or strategic financial planning would be highly valuable.
This is a strategic, flexible role. While we do not expect you to do the day-to-day bookkeeping, we do want someone who is willing to get to know the charity’s operations, help strengthen our internal financial processes, and ensure we’re building sound foundations for growth.
We are currently looking to outsource the day to day bookkeeping, monthly management and annual accounts to a local accountancy firm. Payroll is currently outsourced. Therefore the Treasurer’s input is primarily at a governance and advisory level rather than day-to-day financial administration.
-Key Responsibilities:
The Treasurer provides strategic financial guidance to the Board of Trustees and supports the charity's mission through sound financial management. We also want someone who will challenge us and bring their different points of view. We are more interested in your passion and your potential than your previous experience as a treasurer or trustee.
-The Treasurer role will include:
• Advising the Board on financial strategy, risk management, and resource allocation.
• Advising the Board on the financial implications of MISS’s strategic plans and key assumptions in the operational plan and annual budget.
• Ensuring financial transparency; develop and monitor realistic budgets, cash flow and forecasts: maintain MISS Support’s financial sustainability,
• Ensuring annual accounts and other reporting requirements are prepared and submitted to the OSCR (Scottish Charity Regulator) on time.
• Oversee the financial activities of MISS and ensure they are legal, constitutional and comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
• Oversee MISS’s financial management, ensuring robust policies, procedures, processes and controls are in place.
• Liaising with the CEO, Chair and the Board of Trustees to develop their financial understanding, duties and responsibilities.
• Presenting financial data in an accessible and easy to understand format and providing advice and guidance to the Board on a range of financial matters, including risk.
• The Treasurer will be expected to attend Board meetings, which are held every 2 months and the Annual General Meeting. In addition to Board meetings. It is estimated that the Treasurer will need to be able to spend approximately 5 hours per month on MISS Support financial matters.
A fantastic opportunity to make a real difference with a successful charity and for the people we support.
