About this opportunity

Police Special Constables, a volunteering role like no other.

Make a difference in your community:

Did you know you can volunteer with Police Scotland – a position known as a Special Constable– during times that suit you?

Our Special Constables are volunteer Police Officers who come from all walks of life. They are professionals, parents, taxi drivers, teachers and students where they, and many more like-minded people, are looking to challenge themselves.

What’s more, Special Constables are only required to provide up to 96 hours per year and our flexible approach means they choose when they can assist us.

What is a Special Constable?

Special Constables are dedicated volunteer Police Officers who have the same powers, equipment and uniform as our full-time officers. However, they choose when to go on duty, that fits around their personal life.

This makes the role extremely flexible and attractive for those with an interest in policing and supporting their communities whilst balancing their personal commitments.

By donating time and skills. Special Constables play a vital role in supporting Police Scotland - providing a visible police presence, responding to incidents and building stronger links between the service and our communities - all contributing to a safer Scotland.

What does a Special Constable do?

Special Constables are trained to be confident and effective in their roles whilst being supported by our full time Police Officers. The role is diverse and varied, with Special Constables offering support to a variety of situations. This can include responding to calls, walking the beat, engaging with the public, problem solving in our communities and assisting at events.

As the role is diverse, challenging, exciting, often-fast paced and with no two days ever the same. We need to ensure that our police volunteers feel confident when they come and support us.

We take the time to develop our Special Constables where they are given the opportunity to exercise valuable leadership, problem solving, decision making, team working and communication skills.

Who can join as a Special Constable?

There is no typical Special Constable and success will very much depend on who you are as a person. Not your background, education or age.

Attitude, enthusiasm, honesty and commitment are extremely important to us. However, there are some requirements that must be met to be eligible for this role.

These include:

  • Being 18 years of age
  • Physically fit
  • Emotionally resilient
  • Able to work as part of a team

We are not looking for formal qualifications or a driving licence, and we encourage applications from all walks of life. However, you must be of good medical health, have no restrictions in place to volunteer and have resided in the UK for a minimum of 3 years prior to application. You must also meet our vetting standards.

If you can meet these criteria, ensuring that your core values can match ours. You might have what it takes to be a valued member of our Special Constable team.

We are also a disability confident organisation and are proud to be double tick accredited by Jobcentre Plus.
