About this opportunity
Thank you for your interest in joining the Board of Sport Aberdeen, either as our next Chair or as a trustee director. This is a significant opportunity to help shape the future of one of the North East of Scotland’s leading sport and leisure charities, supporting healthier, more active and more connected communities across Aberdeen.
Sport Aberdeen is a multi-award-winning charitable trust and arms-length external organisation delivering sport, physical activity and wellbeing services on behalf of Aberdeen City Council. Since 2010, we have grown to become the largest provider of sport and leisure services in the region, with more than 500 employees, over 800 volunteers, 31 venues and more than two million visits each year.
Our purpose is simple but powerful: to create opportunities, inspire people and change lives through sport and physical activity. As a charity, every penny we generate is reinvested into our venues, programmes, people and communities. Our work spans swimming, tennis, ice skating, snowsports, golf, gymnastics, health programmes and community wellbeing initiatives, reaching people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds.
Joining our Board means contributing your time, judgement, experience and networks to an organisation with real civic purpose and impact. Trustees provide strategic leadership, governance and stewardship, helping ensure Sport Aberdeen remains sustainable, accountable and focused on community benefit. Your insight, challenge, visibility and advocacy will help strengthen our voice and extend our reach across the city.
For our next Chair, this is a particularly important leadership opportunity. The Chair will lead an effective, inclusive and values-led Board; support and hold the Chief Executive Officer to account; promote strong governance and financial sustainability; and act as a credible ambassador for Sport Aberdeen with partners, stakeholders, staff and communities.
We are seeking people who bring sound judgement, integrity, constructive challenge and a commitment to public benefit. Board-level experience is welcome, but not essential for every trustee role. We are equally interested in fresh perspectives, relevant professional expertise, strong community connections, commercial or financial insight, governance experience, or a passion for improving lives through physical activity.
Sport Aberdeen has experienced challenges over recent months, and the recruitment of a new Chair and trustees forms an important part of Board renewal and succession planning. The Board is committed to ensuring the organisation emerges stronger, more resilient and well positioned for the future. For the right candidates, this is a chance to help guide that next chapter.
We are committed to building a Board that reflects the diversity of the communities we serve and welcome interest from people with different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Whether you are taking your first step into non-executive leadership or already bring board-level experience, we would be delighted to hear from you.
Excellent support and relevant training is provided to all Volunteers/Trustees. New trustees /Chair will be given a full induction, which will include individual meetings with key staff in the organisation and tours of organisations facilities.
