About this opportunity

Food banks provide three-day emergency food parcels for people in crisis, working closely with partners across the community. Van drivers are essential to ensuring this support reaches people when they need it most. Whether collecting donations from local supermarkets and community partners or delivering food parcels directly to clients, you will play a vital role in helping families and individuals facing hardship.

This role includes two volunteer opportunities, both operating on Mondays and Fridays:

1. Collections Driver (non–client facing) – Collects food donations from supermarkets, schools, churches and other donors.

2. Deliveries Driver (client facing) – Delivers three-day food parcels directly to clients’ homes.

Volunteers may choose to support one or both areas, depending on preference.

Key tasks:

If driving the Collections route (non–client facing):

• Collect food donations from local supermarkets, schools, churches, and other partners
• Deliver collected donations to the warehouse promptly
• Carry medium to heavy boxes of food (within Manual Handling guidelines)
• Load and unload the van safely and efficiently

If delivering food parcels to clients (client facing):

• Deliver three-day food parcels to clients’ homes
• Carry bags of food parcels (lighter than warehouse boxes)
• Represent the food bank in a friendly, respectful and supportive manner
• Maintain client confidentiality and follow safeguarding procedures

For both roles:

• Drive safely and responsibly across the local area
• Follow all Trussell Trust and food bank procedures, including health & safety and driving policies
• Report any concerns, incidents, or vehicle issues

Benefits of volunteering:

• Meet new people and be part of a friendly, supportive team
• Make a meaningful and immediate difference in your community
• Gain confidence, purpose and satisfaction through helping others
• Use your existing skills to support a cause that matters

Impact of your role:

• Your commitment helps ensure no donation goes to waste and food reaches those who need it
• You will directly support families and individuals experiencing crisis, offering practical help at a crucial moment
• You help create a reliable and compassionate service that people can depend on
• By volunteering, you strengthen the future of the food bank and its ability to support the community

Support:

• You will be given all the required training and support before starting your role.
• You will have a main contact throughout your time volunteering.
• Your main contact will be the food bank team.

Time commitment: Minimum of 2 hours and up to 4 hours per week (regular weekly commitment).
