Aberdeen Climate Action was created in late 2014 by Alison Stuart and Erik Dalhuisjen. Erik, an oil engineer, was concerned about the impact that fossil fuel emissions were having on a warming world. Alison, a human rights lawyer, wanted the UK to transition to a low carbon sustainable economy in a just and equitable way.
We are a completely volunteer-run organisation that aims to inform and prompt action on climate change and sustainable practices in the North East of Scotland through awareness raising, education, partnerships and support.
Central to our activities are our monthly evening climate cafes, held on the first Tuesday of every month between 7-9pm. Our Climate Café concentrates on a different topic each month and is a fun and informal way to gain more knowledge and understanding on climate change and action and learn about projects, going on in the North East, which empower and encourage sustainability and help combat climate change. It also gives people an opportunity to interact with those who have different knowledge and have made projects happen and be inspired.
The café covers existing community-based sustainability projects, areas where council / government action is required, new advances, and industrial and government strategies which we believe need closer scrutiny. Topics range from community energy, to new advances in food growing to carbon capture and storage, offsetting, diet, fashion and activism. In the 7 years the café has operated we have never repeated a topic!
For our members who want more hands-on activities, ACA organises regular outdoor events to take care of our environment. In the past year, the Action Team has organised several litter picks, mainly on Aberdeen Beach, over the summer months. We have also organised tree and bulb planting sessions, in several areas of Torry, in collaboration with the Old Torry Community Centre Trust. The ACA Action Team is open to other suggestions of activities so please get in touch if you would like to take part in one of these or organise one yourself.
The recruitment and membership co-lead will help with administrative duties, such as interviewing potential volunteers, writing volunteer job adverts, attending team meetings, and keeping the volunteer database tidy. In addition, you may be expected to check in with existing volunteers to ensure they are happy in their volunteer role.
Aberdeen Climate Action (ACA) is seeking social media team volunteers to help with the crucial work of our social media team. The purpose of the social media team is to guide the creation of new posts, to unify the organisation’s social media presence.
