About this opportunity

We are committed to a programme of activity relating to the care and conservation of the collections, with the aim of ensuring that objects on display and in storage are cared for following museum sector best practice standards. As a collections care volunteer, you will be assisting and supporting the Care & Conservation Officer to carry out conservation cleaning of artworks and museum objects, conduct condition assessments of the collection, and maintain an appropriate museum environment. This is all part of best practice in museum preventative conservation.

You will be involved in:

• Regular deep cleans of artworks and museum objects on display at Aberdeen Art Gallery, Maritime Museum, Provost Skene’s House (carried out during opening hours as ‘conservation in action’)
• Regular deep cleans of artworks, museum objects and secure storage areas at museum storage facility, Aberdeen Treasure Hub
• Conducting condition reports to improve catalogue records, identify deterioration and improve storage
• Identify future needs relating to remedial conservation, both in house and conducted by external conservators
• You will be volunteering once or twice a quarter.
